Rabat – “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose,” said Iranian football player Reza Ghoochannejhad on social media. Despite his controversial score against his own team, Aziz Bouhaddouz can count on the support of his fans, and moreover, on the surprising support of some members of Iran’s 2018 World Cup team. The Moroccan attacker, who called himself an “idiot” after scoring the own-goal that won the game for Iran, can find comfort in the reassuring messages of the Iranian national team.“Aziz Bouhaddouz, I don’t know you personally, but in life, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Don’t let this own-goal bring you down. We are all professional sportsmen, and this is a part of football. I am so happy and proud of my team and my country, but wanted to wish you also all the best in your career,” Iran’s attacker Ghoochannejhad wrote on his Instagram page. Fellow Iranian national team member Alireza Jahanbakhsh also had a message of encouragement for Bouhaddouz, writing, “Aziz Bouhaddouz, keep your head up, old man, we are all professionals, so do not worry and stay positive.”For his part, Sadar Azmoun shared a picture of the Moroccan player crying, asking him to “be a man and to have faith.”Although he was harshly criticized for “letting his team down,” Bouhaddouz has also received an outpouring of love and support from Moroccan fans, who don’t want him to blame himself for a “mistake that could happen to everyone.”Placed in Group B, Morocco’s next game will be against Portugal on June 20. The Portuguese team just eked out a victory against Spain with a late-in-the-game free kick. The team’s superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, was responsible for all three of his team’s goals. Spain, who claimed three goals against the Portuguese team, will be Morocco’s final opponent in the first round, on June 25. read more
The library honours 243 staff members who have died in the service of the world body, including those killed together with Mr. Vieira de Mello in the attack on the UN’s Baghdad headquarters on 19 August 2003.”There can be no finer tribute,” Klaus Toepfer, Director General of the UN Office at Nairobi and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), said at the launching ceremony. “A library is a centre for learning. If we are to deliver a more tolerant world in which the values of peace and humanity defeat the bullet and the bomb, then we must increase knowledge and learning, particularly for those with little or no access including the poor and women.”Anna Tibaijuka, Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, said Mr. Vieira de Mello would be particularly pleased that the library will benefit Africans, given his work as UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Great Lakes Region of Africa and in Mozambique.”More than most, he realized how important it is to develop the people of the continent in order to ensure a peaceful future,” she added. “In today’s world, I feel sure that the physical location of the library will not limit the service that can be provided. This library will greatly benefit the East African region and beyond.”The library, which houses the collections of several UN agencies in Kenya, will provide computer access to thousands of electronic journals in various fields. In a separate development, a “Service of Thanksgiving and Hope” was held in the United Kingdom today in tribute to the memory of those who died in the 19 August bombing. In a message to the gathering, the Secretary-General indicated that he would soon name a new envoy to Iraq “to replace my dear friend Sergio Vieira de Mello whom you are remembering today.”Mr. Annan pledged to take “all possible precautions” to protect the new Special Representative and associated UN personnel. “I ask you to join me in praying for their safety and success, as I join you today in praying for the future of the Iraqi people,” he said in the message, which was delivered by his Director of Communications, Edward Mortimer. read more
Speaking to reporters in Geneva after what he described as a “fairly long meeting” where the two sides discussed “sensitive” matters regarding the security situation and terrorism in Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, Joint Special Representative of the United Nations and the League of Arab States said that the first round of talks would wrap up after a little more than a week. “Tomorrow morning will be our last session. I hope that we will try…to draw some lessons about what we did and see if we can organize ourselves better for the next session. I think that’s enough for a beginning,” said Mr. Brahimi, expressing the hope that when the talks reconvene – reportedly in February – “we will be able to have a more structured discussion.”Since the conflict erupted in March 2011 between the Government and various groups seeking the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad, well over 100,000 people have been killed and nearly 9 million others driven from their homes. More than 9.3 million people within the country need humanitarian aid, the UN has said, with over 2.5 million of them living in areas where access is seriously constrained or non-existent.The goal of the talks, under way in Switzerland since 24 January, is to achieve a political solution to the Syrian conflict through a comprehensive agreement between the two sides for the full implementation of the Geneva communiqué, adopted after the first international meeting on the issue on 30 June 2012, and since endorsed by the UN Security Council. The communiqué lays out key steps in a process to end the violence. Among others, it calls for the establishment of a transitional governing body, with full executive powers and made up by members of the present Government and the opposition and other groups, as part of agreed principles and guidelines for a Syrian-led political transition. While noting that the two sides agreed today that “terrorism does exist in Syria and that is a very serious problem”, Mr. Brahimi said no agreement was reached on how to deal with it. However, the rival delegations did agree to hold a moment of silence to honour victims of the civil war – “no matter which [side] they belong to.” Overall, Mr. Brahimi said, “we haven’t noticed any major change, to be honest, in the two sides’ positions,” and he expressed deep disappointment that there has been no movement on allowing UN aid convoys into Homs, or on allowing civilians to leave the besieged city, which has been cut off from supplies.“I am …very, very disappointed, because the situation in Homs is bad and has been bad for months, years even. That is the first place very bad fighting and destruction has taken place,” he said, though he added that negotiations on humanitarian access are still ongoing. Turning to another issue of major concern, Mr. Brahimi said that negotiations have also been under way regarding the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus, and today, some aid has gone in. “So, a partial solution in Yarmouk, but no solution yet in Homs,” he said. The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) earlier confirmed that was able to deliver aid to the residents trapped in Yarmouk.According to UNRWA Spokesperson Chris Gunness, the agency distributed over 1,000 food parcels to the Palestinians in the camp, the first such aid since 21 January, when it had distributed 138 food parcels. “We are encouraged by the delivery of this aid and the cooperation of the parties on the ground. We hope to continue and increase substantially the amount of aid being delivered because the numbers of those needing assistance is in the tens of thousands,” said Mr. Gunness, stressing that number includes some 18,000 Palestinians, among them women and children. “We need to build on today’s modest achievement. UNRWA and the international community urgently need secure, substantial and permanent humanitarian access,” he said. read more
“Having won majorities of Scottish votes in the 1950s, the Tories seemed to have gone extinct by 1997, when not a single one of their candidates won in Scotland. The party’s resurrection—it won 31 seats in the Scottish Parliament in 2016 and 29 per cent of the Scottish vote in last year’s U.K. general election—owes much to the refreshing, rambunctious style of Ruth Davidson.”He adds: “Could she be a future British Prime Minister, succeeding the beleaguered Theresa May? ‘I love London,’ she has said. ‘No plans to move there myself, but great to visit.’ Many voters south of the border would love her to reconsider.” Meghan Markle is named as a ‘leader’ A spokesman for the Scottish Conservatives said: “Ruth’s extremely honoured to be included on such a list. And while she’s flattered to receive an accolade from across the Atlantic, her full focus remains on her job here in Scotland.”Mr Ferguson states in his tribute: “There was a time when the Conservative Party looked as dead as a dodo in Scotland. The “refreshing and rambunctious” Ruth Davidson has been named by Time magazine as one of its 100 most influential people of 2018.The leader of the Scottish Conservatives has been chosen as a “pioneer” and is described as a proponent of same-sex marriage who is currently planning her wedding to her partner Jen Wilson.Ms Davidson is also mentioned, in the magazine’s profile by the historian Niall Ferguson, as someone who has been tipped as a possible future prime minister. Her fellow pioneers include the American snow boarder Chloe Kim and the US comedian Tiffany Haddish.Theresa May and Nicola Sturgeon are not on the list, with those nominated as “leaders” including Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Donald Trump and the London mayor Sadiq Khan. The “artists” on Time’s list include Nicola Kidman and Hugh Jackman, while among the “titans” are Roger Federer and Oprah Winfrey. The Columbia River Economic Development Council has selected Lisa Nisenfeld, a regional leader in work-force training, as its new president, the nonprofit said Monday. The announcement followed a national search launched four months ago after the resignation of former president Bart Phillips.Nisenfeld, who is on personal leave for a family emergency, was unavailable for comment Monday. In a news release, she said putting the Clark County Economic Development Plan into action is her first priority. Commissioned by the CREDC for $80,000, the 127-page plan calls on the county to take a new path toward employment growth built on information technology, health care and international trade. The county’s economy “is at a crossroads” which opens an opportunity to help existing businesses expand and to recruit others to the region, Nisenfeld said in the news release. The board of the CREDC voted unanimously on Sept. 22 to name Nisenfeld to the position, according to Eric Fuller, a commercial real estate broker with Eric Fuller & Associates Inc. in Vancouver and board chairman for the Columbia River Economic Development Council. Before the board’s Sept. 22 decision, Nisenfeld had been serving as interim president of the CREDC. The Vancouver-based nonprofit, which comprises 125 members representing the private and public sectors, was established in 1982 with the aim of creating jobs. read more

They’ve all learned about life in space from Cady Coleman.Coleman is a veteran astronaut who has spent more than 180 days in space, logging more than 70 million miles in orbit.Coleman also has family in Clark County. During her visits to the Vancouver area, Coleman has found the time to make appearances in several local schools. With three different space missions under her belt, Coleman definitely knows her way around, well, Earth’s orbit. So when Bullock was preparing for her role as an astronaut in the motion picture “Gravity,” she talked with Coleman. It’s an aspect of the film that’s gotten a lot of media play in the last couple of weeks — particularly since Coleman was in space at the time. The astronaut was aboard the International Space Station in 2011 when the two women had a telephone conversation.Coleman told Bullock about the physical aspects of the job — dealing with weightlessness — as well as the psychological impact of not being on the same planet as your family. read more
State officials want Alaskans to spend a little bit more money on products grown in state. To do that, the Department of Natural Resources is trying to get more food with the certified Alaska Grown brand out in front of shoppers.Listen nowThe Division of Agriculture has a new campaign called the “$5 Alaska Grown, Five Month Challenge,” which is hoping to coax Alaskans into spending $5 a week for five months on Alaska Grown products.“If every Alaskan were to take this challenge it would put tens of millions of dollars back into the local economy,” Division of Agriculture Director Arthur Keyes said. The division is partnering with forty grocery stores across the state to put Alaska Grown products on their shelves, marked with new promotional displays. That will include mainstays of Alaska farming like carrots and other vegetables, but also locally grown flowers, as well as more protein options like beef and pork.Keyes, who is himself a farmer, sees the initiative as a way of bolstering Alaska’s agricultural sector by raising consumer awareness to ultimately drive market demand.“I want to change how people look at food and how people look at agriculture in Alaska,” Keyes said. “I think people are unaware of how good it is here.”There’s also a longer-term goal of building back some of the state’s food security. As Alaskans have become more dependent on imported supplies during the last couple decades, people are putting away less food in their homes, and communities have come to rely more on planes and ships making regular deliveries. Keyes believes a stronger local agriculture sector is one way boosting resilience in case of a major crisis.“If things got very dire and the supply chain was broken for, let’s say a month, people would absolutely know,” Keyes said. “There would be no doubt that we were in a very bad situation.”The Alaska Grown program started in 1986 to promote locally grown agricultural products. The “Five for Five” initiative starts on June 1st. read more
‘Black Mirror’ Star Miley Cyrus Says Her Episode Is ‘Dark’ and ‘Out There’Top Movie and TV Trailers You Might Have Missed This Week Stay on target One of the biggest recent surprises for Netflix users, at least American ones, was Black Mirror. Once the streaming service got the rights to the British anthology show, a whole new audience was taken aback by these satirical and terrifying tales of technology in a world only about five minutes into our own future. So in it’s quest to own all the original shows it can, Netflix stepped in to produce season 3 of the show. At New York Comic Con we got a taste of what creator Charlie Brooker and his team are dreaming up for this techno Twilight Zone.Black Mirror’s increased popularity allowed it to snag some higher star power for this new season. Actors like Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Jupiter Ascending) along with directors like Joe Wright (Hanna) and Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) all pitched in for different installments. The panel itself was a screening for Trachtenberg’s episode “Playtest.” The story follows a broke American backpacker who agrees to test an experimental augmented reality horror experience from a Hideo Kojima or Shinji Mikami-style Japanese video game auteur. Without spoiling too much, the personal nightmare soon descends into mind twists and shenanigans like something out of Jacob’s Ladder, Inception, Existenz, or even BioShock, which is subtly referenced. As a fan of the two first seasons of Black Mirror, I couldn’t help but notice how much more “American” this episode felt. The main character’s bro sense of humor was a departure from the drier wit of past episodes, as well as the British supporting characters. Plus the meta knowledge of horror tropes dipped a little too much into Scream territory. That said, the episode was plenty tense. And as far as personal nightmares go, as someone who both covers augmented/virtual reality tech and fears reprisals from companies against journalists who break NDAs, this episode struck a few nerves. You won’t have to wait long to watch “Playtest” and the rest of Black Mirror season 3. All six episodes debut on Netflix on October 21. And the previous two seasons are streaming now. Between this and some other things going on in the world right now, this might end up being the scariest October ever. read more
