3 September 2010Although the global economy is on the cusp of a fragile recovery, governments must take concerted action to create jobs to spur growth and development, according to the heads of the United Nations International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Although the global economy is on the cusp of a fragile recovery, governments must take concerted action to create jobs to spur growth and development, according to the heads of the United Nations International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).“A job-centred growth strategy should be our number one priority,” said ILO Director General Juan Somavia, ahead of a high-level conference on 13 September in Oslo. “Otherwise, the economic recovery may take years to reach those who need it most, or it may not reach them at all.”The joint ILO-IMF summit, hosted by Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, will explore ways to forge a sustainable, job-rich economic recovery. Two years after the world was plunged into a recession, unemployment remains at record highs in many countries, with the ILO estimating that 30 million more people are out of work today than in 2007. There is little indication that unemployment rates will fall in the near future. The ILO and IMF are coming together in a bid to stimulate discussion of global cooperation and policy innovations to promote job growth and social cohesion.“The Great Recession has created a painful legacy of unemployment and this devastation threatens the livelihood, security and dignity of millions of people across the world,” said IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn.“The international community must rise to meet this challenge,” he continued. “Now is the time for our collective action.”The two organizations have issued a background paper ahead of the gathering in the Norwegian capital, which is expected to be attended by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, Prime Minister George Papandreous of Greece and Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of Spain, among others.“The scars of this distress in labour markets could last for a very long time – in the case of young workers unable to get their first job, a lifetime,” the document cautions. “Political, community, business and labour leaders all over the world are asking for answers to the threat of a slow jobless recovery. And they want to know that recovery can transition into strong, sustainable and balanced growth.” read more
A heated debate took place in Parliament today on the New York Times (NYT) article which alleged that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had received funds from a Chinese company operating in Sri Lanka for his election campaign in 2015.The debate took place after a motion was submitted to Parliament on the allegations by United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Thushara Indunil Amarasena. Amarasena said that Rajapaksa must respond to the allegations in Parliament yet he was not in Parliament today. The joint opposition accused Amarasena of not knowing what the contents of the article was despite submitting the motion for a debate. However the UNP said that the article had been re-published in the local media and so the contents were widely known.Amarasena said that the joint opposition must respond to the allegations or take NYT to court instead of threatening the local journalists who assisted the newspaper with logistics for the article. He said that local journalists Dharisha Bastians and Arthur Wamanan had been threatened for assisting NYT. (Colombo Gazette) Joint opposition Parliamentarian Keheliya Rambukwella said that it is customary that the motion is read in full for it to be taken for a debate.Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardena said that if a motion is taken for a debate then the motion and relevant section must be first read out in full. read more
Fair or not, rookies Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III will be inextricably linked throughout their NFL careers. So it is for promising quarterbacks drafted first and second overall in a sports world that demands immediate results. Never mind that playing quarterback in the NFL can be a rough business with a steep learning curve for anybody.Imagine then the added pressure of withstanding all that while feeling forced to keep up with a contemporary. It’s already begun for Luck of the Indianapolis Colts and for Griffin of the Washington Redskins. And guess what? It’s only going to continue because the Redskins and Colts face one another Saturday night at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.Talking heads on TV and sportswriters from around the nation have already been quick to compare and contrast the two just two preseason games into their careers. Luck, the No. 1 overall pick out of Stanford, gets the nod so far. He shook two early interceptions to lead his team to 17 unanswered second-quarter points in Sunday night’s nationally televised 26-24 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.Luck appeared shaky early on, throwing an ill-advised pass that Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor picked off and returned 50 yards for a touchdown. He was saddled with another interception that had first been bobbled by one of his receivers.Luck settled down from then on, showing the kind of pocket poise that has had many calling him the best quarterback prospect to enter the league in years. A week after shredding the St. Louis Rams for a pair of touchdown passes, Luck registered another strong performance against a Pittsburgh defense that ranked No. 1 overall a year ago.He passed for 175 yards and ran for a score as the Colts turned an early 14-point deficit into a lead at the time Luck exited the game.Griffin, the former Baylor star and last year’s Heisman Trophy winner, never got into a groove of any kind during the Redskins’ 33-31 loss at Chicago on Friday night. Looking every bit like a star-struck rookie, he passed for just 49 yards while getting sacked three times and losing a fumble in his one forgettable half of play.Griffin had enjoyed a solid outing against a Buffalo defense that showed very little a week earlier, but struggled against a Bears defense that blitzed often. The Redskins’ six possessions of the first half resulted in four punts, a turnover and a field goal. It was backup quarterback and fellow rookie Kirk Cousins who masterminded Washington’s furious second-half rally at Soldier Field. read more
A nine-year-old boy was pictured for a hospital’s promotional magazine being given a treatment which would ultimately kill him. Now his bereaved mother is calling for justice over his death and the deaths of around 2,500 other Britons who were given contaminated blood products between 1970 and 1991. So when a new blood plasma treatment became available in… But the treatment used a blood product called cryoprecipitate which was laborious to administer through a transfusion in hospital and was often in short supply. As a haemophiliac whose blood would not clot properly on its own, Ian Mather needed treatment whenever he had a bump or scrape to help his blood clot and prevent internal bleeding. read more
Pro wrestling can be kind of a hard sell to an educated consumer like the ones who frequent this site. Let’s be frank: it’s long been an entertainment for rednecks and children, and most of the time it’s very, very dumb. Steroidal musclemen yelling at each other and pretending to fight can only take you so far.But a few years ago, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez of From Dusk ‘Til Dawn fame decided to change the game. He bankrolled and co-produced a new kind of rasslin’ show, one thatm took equal inspiration from Mexican grappling, grindhouse horror and serial drama. Lucha Underground is unlike anything you’ve ever seen on TV. Unfortunately, because it’s on the ultra-niche El Rey network, it’s hard to actually see on TV.That all changes right now, as Netflix has just added the first two seasons of the show to its streaming library in the United States. Let me sell you on why you should be watching it from a geek’s perspective. One caveat: the show takes a little bit to find its footing, so the first season slowly evolves from “wrestling show” to “totally nuts” as characters get introduced. Stick with it, though. It’s a great ride. The Boss And His MonsterThe linchpin of Lucha Underground is Dario Cueto, the owner of the “Temple” in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles where the fights go down. Played by Luis Fernandez-Gil, Dario is one of the most hilariously evil villains on TV right now, a scheming, manipulative bastard who loves to see people suffer. He’s constantly pulling the rug out from under our feet in new and different ways. But for all his brains, Dario doesn’t have much physical prowess. That is, until he’s ousted from the Temple at the end of the first season. We learn that Dario’s not an only child, and his brother Matanza is a massive masked man with a thirst for blood. When he makes his in-ring debut, it’s like watching Jason Voorhees slaughter an entire summer camp in fifteen minutes.Pentagon’s Dark MasterSee that guy? That’s Pentagon Jr, one of the show’s breakout characters. He’s a royally pissed off skeleton wrestler who has a look made for cosplay and he likes one thing: breaking people’s arms. Over the first season of the show, Pentagon is a wild force of chaos in and out of the ring, taking orders from a mysterious Dark Master to decimate everything in his way.So who is this Dark Master? We’re not going to spoil it except to say that he was under your nose all along, and the first season ends in a wild bloodbath between the two that will shock the hell out of you.The WomenIf you’re a fan of ladies kicking ass, Buffy-style, you’ll find a lot to love on Lucha Underground. There’s no gender segregation here, which means that men and women square off in the ring on equal terms and with equal intensity. The show’s leading women is Sexy Star, who fought back against her domestic abuser husband and used it to motivate her to succeed in the ring, and she’s a gutsy, never-say-die babyface who takes part in one of the show’s most brutal matches, a “No Mas” contest against rival Mariposa. We’re not going to spoil stuff too much, but women play a big role on the show in a number of ways, from teleporting witch Catrina to MMA badass Ivelisse. And the show’s mostly pretty good about not sexualizing them – the announcers have some trouble at first but quickly fall in line. The Dragon And The SpacemanTwo of the more traditional luchadors on the show are Drago and Aero Star, a pair of high flyers who team up a lot during the first season. Because nothing gold can stay, Dario Cueto puts them in a best of five series against each other, with the penalty being that the loser is banned from the Temple forever. The duo give it their all, but finally Drago comes out the loser. When Dario makes to eject him from Lucha Underground forever, Drago morphs into an actual dragon and flies away over Los Angeles. Not to be outdone, Aero Star later blasts off on a mission of his own, traveling a thousand years into the past to unravel the mystery of the seven Aztec tribes. More on that later. The Man Of A Thousand DeathsThe primary antagonist for the show’s first season is the hulking Mil Muertes, the “man of a thousand deaths.” Found clinging to life at seven years old in the rubble of the Mexico City earthquake by the immortal Catrina, she nursed him back to health by feeding him the souls of the dead. Mil is a straight-up terrifying figure, and when season 2 opens he’s ruling over the Temple sitting atop a throne of Goddamned skulls.Mil’s rivalry with Fenix (the mythical bird that rises from the grave) is the engine that keeps the show’s first season going, as Fenix is the only man in the Temple that seems to have Mil’s number. The Supreme DicksNot all of the characters on Lucha Underground are larger than life. The trio of Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans and PJ Black are just three total assholes who love to kick people in the dick, play air guitar and cheat like crazy to win matches. The egomaniac Mundo is the leader of the Worldwide Underground, rail-thin Canadian Evans is a next level smack-talker with a serious death wish, and Black describes himself as “the Darewolf,” which is half daredevil, half werewolf.Comic relief is an essential part of the show, and it keeps it from bogging down in myth and violence. It’s stunning how well Lucha Underground delivers truly funny bits in between matches. The Massive MythologyMost wrestling shows revolve around pretty basic conflicts: I want that belt, you insulted my honor, I’m just an asshole. But Lucha Underground has a whole crazy cosmology that takes more twists and turns than Lost. Seven Aztec tribes have battled throughout the ages, and their representatives are being drawn back to the Temple for one final conflict. This starts to play out in the first two seasons with deranged fan Marty Martinez being revealed as a member of the Moth tribe, but things really get wild when the Snake and Rabbit crews show up.The dedication to long-term storytelling makes LU more akin to something like Sons Of Anarchy, a pulpy, action-packed show that wants to keep you tuned in to see what happens next. It’s way more thoughtful than just about any wrestling program to date.If this whets your appetite, hop on board the LU train and once you’re done, track down the third season as well. That one sees an enchanted gauntlet that gives the wearer superhuman strength, more murder and serious damage both bodily and property. The fourth season is in production, and we expect more of the same.View as: One Page Slides1. Lucha Underground MaskBuy Me Now2. Lucha Underground RaglanBuy Me Now3. Stay on target Fall For the Viral Instagram Hoax? So Did Lots of CelebsRussian Bots Found to Have Rigged ‘The Voice Kids’ Talent Show More than 280 people were arrested in an international operation targeting alleged email scammers. The U.S. Department of Justice this week announced the conclusion of a global effort to stop Business Email Compromise (BEC) schemes designed to hijack wire transfers. The four-month sting, known as Operation reWired, led to 74 arrests in the US and 207 overseas—including 167 in Nigeria, 18 in Turkey, and 15 in Ghana, plus those in France, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, and the UK.Feds also seized nearly $3.7 million.BEC, known as “cyber-enabled financial fraud,” is what the DOJ called a “sophisticated scam” aimed at employees with access to company finances, as well as businesses working with foreign suppliers or which regularly perform wire transfers. The same thugs exploit individuals (often senior citizens) by impersonating a business colleague, romantic partner, or lottery worker and convincing them to make wire transfers to bank accounts controlled by the criminals.Scams may involve fraudulent requests for checks, target sensitive information, and may not involve an actual “compromise” of an email account for computer network.“The Department of Justice has increased efforts in taking aggressive enforcement action against fraudsters who are targeting American citizens and their businesses,” Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen said in a statement.“Anyone who engages in deceptive practices like this should know they will not go undetected and will be held accountable,” he added. These cases affect not only the victim businesses, but the global economy.According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, nearly $1.3 billion in loss was reported in 2018 from BEC and Email Account Compromise (EAC)—nearly twice as much as the previous year. Some cases involved defrauding small-to-large businesses, while others saw individual victims transfer high-dollar funds or sensitive records.“Through Operation reWired, we’re sending a clear message to the criminals who orchestrate these BEC schemes,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said. “We’ll keep coming after you, no matter where you are. Government on Tuesday admitted it was a mistake to deny Arjuna award to Commonwealth Games gold-medalist boxer Manoj Kumar initially and said it happened because of “mistaken identity”. “It was our mistake. It had happened due to mistaken identity. As soon as the error was detected, we have decide to confer the Arjuna award to Manoj Kumar,” sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal told Lok Sabha during Question Hour. After being snubbed for a second time, Manoj took the legal route and filed a case in the Delhi High Court. In the court, the ministry had admitted Manoj was initially not considered for the award by the committee as they mistakenly believed that he was involved in a doping case. Sonowal said the selection process of Arjuna award is very transparent and the sports ministry has moved to objective selection process from its earlier subjective process. read more

FHFA Fixed-Rate Mortgage Freddie Mac Mortgage Rates 2014-03-31 Tory Barringer FHFA: Mortgage Rates Slip in February Contract mortgage interest rates decreased slightly from January to February, according to data from the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA).The agency reported late March that the national average contract rate for the purchase of previously occupied homes was 4.30 percent for loans closed in late February, a decline of 0.07 percent. The interest rate survey also showed the average rate on a conventional, 30-year fixed-rate mortgage was 4.45 percent, a drop of 22 basis points from January. The decline in the 30-year rate stands in contrast to Freddie Mac’s weekly Primary Mortgage Market Survey, which shows rates starting the month at an average 4.23 percent and rising steadily over the weeks to finish at 4.37 percent. The effective interest rate was down 14 basis points, averaging 4.38 percent for the month. The effective rate accounts for the addition of initial fees and charges over the life of the mortgage.Overall, the contract rate on the composite of all mortgage loans was 4.22 percent, also down 14 basis points from 4.36 percent to start the year.As interest rates are typically locked in 30-45 days before a loan closes, February’s data reflects market rates from mid- to late January.Meanwhile, the average loan amount for all loans was down $8,700 to an average $275,700, FHFA reported. UN Special Representative and Unficyp Chief of Mission Elizabeth Spehar hopes the two leaders meet soon after they both expressed a willingness to do so.Following a briefing of the UN Security Council in New York on Friday night, Spehar said: “We knows that the two leaders have decided that they want to meet, and I hope that it will happen very soon.”“I think it is still early days, but we do know that the two leaders have decided that they would like to meet and I’m hoping that will happen very soon, and I’m sure that Ms Lute would also look at returning to the island in the very near future but there has nothing been said yet to my knowledge”, she said. She added, during her statement to the press, that she was still not in a position to comment on what would exactly happen after both President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, separately sent letters to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Spehar said she was also unable to say when Guterres’ special envoy Jane Holl Lute would visit the island. Her briefing with the Security Council lasted more than two hours, and she said she explained the recent developments and activities of both Unficyp and the UN’s Good Offices in Cyprus. “I can confirm to you that the Council remains interested and engaged on the Cyprus issue,” she said.Spehar said she told the Security Council about the various confidence-building measures (CBMs) that have been enacted, including the interconnection of the electricity grids, and mobile phone networks.“I also noted to the Security Council that these confidence-building measures do not just have a practical and positive impact on the daily life of Cypriots, but that they are also emblematic of what is still possible when the leaders show the political will necessary.”However, she added that despite the confidence-building measures, the Council still shared concern over the lack of talks to settle the Cyprus issue.“I underlined that we have just passed the two years since the end of the conference on Cyprus, and this is surely an issue of concern. They also shared my concern over the tensions in the area, including those off the coast of Cyprus.”Commenting on the role of Unficyp, Spehar said that she informed the Security Council about the mission’s critical role for keeping balance, especially on and around the buffer zone.“No one assumes that resuming negotiations will be an easy task. There is a great desire on the part of the Council to see the leaders and the parties, in general, get back to the negotiation table as soon as possible and I personally firmly believe that returning to the talks still offers the best chance for lasting peace in Cyprus,” Spehar said. She added that the Secretary-General also noted this in a recent report, where he hoped the two sides would take part in the continued consultations constructively.Spehar thanked the council for their support of Unficyp and their support for Lute in her consultations.Asked about Lute’s efforts in Cyprus, Spehar said that they had not failed, and were continuing and that the Secretary-General was clear in his report about wanting Lute to continue her consultations. She added that the Security Council wanted to know when talks might start, which Spehar said was in the hands of the parties involved.”Ahead of the briefing, the deputy UK representative to the UN, Jonathan Allen said that Britain believes it is critically important that there be a settlement on the Cyprus problem, based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation.“We are satisfied to see that the leaders seem to be willing to meet later this month and we hope that this will lead to the start of talks for the settlement,” she said. You May LikeCalifornia Earthquake AuthorityEarthquake coverage that comes with optionsCalifornia Earthquake AuthorityUndoLivestlyChip And Joanna’s $18M Mansion Is Perfect, But It’s The Backyard Everyone Is Talking AboutLivestlyUndoIcePopMan Notices A Strange Hole In This Lake, So He Gets A Drone, Flies It Inside And Captures ThisIcePopUndo Our View: Argaka mukhtar should not act as if he owns the beachUndoA grotesque choice of prime minister for Britain?UndoTales from the Coffeeshop: Lies, lies and holy revelationsUndoby Taboolaby Taboola read more

insist that "death squads" controlled by Duterte are responsible for an estimated 700 extrajudicial executions Upon hearing this Duterte was aghast: "700" he queried on live TV "They miscalculated 1700" This mordant wit is central to the allure of Duterte who appears incapable of giving a speech or interview without injecting one caustic soundbite threat or taunt to fill headlines the next day Speaking to an influential Manila business forum Duterte joked about his philandering and love of Viagra Challenged about the legality of his "death squads" he goaded opponents that he would just sign his own presidential pardon for mass murder Asked what he thought of US Republican presidential nomination front-runner Donald Trump Duterte gave typically short shrift: "Hes a bigot" Duterte has had to shrug off similar allegations in recent weeks During a campaign speech on April 16 he joked that he "should have been first" in the 1989 gang rape of Australian missionary Jacqueline Hamill during a prison riot in Davao City She was subsequently murdered The remarks drew widespread condemnation which in turn drew scornful ripostes from Duterte who told a womens-rights group to "go to hell" and the Australian ambassador to "stay out" Even his eldest daughter who in defending her fathers remarks said that she had also been a victim of rape was dismissed as a "drama queen" by the presidential aspirant Read More: Philippine Presidential Candidate Defends Remarks on Rape: This Is How Men Talk Yet polls dont lie A Pulse Asia survey released Tuesday showed Duterte at 35% of the vote in the five-way race to the Malacañang Palace well ahead of his closet rival Senator Grace Poe who has 23% The last six years under President Benigno Aquino III may have seen growth hover at 65% national debt fall drastically and glut of foreign investment but for many Filipinos this boom lacks inclusiveness and they hanker for a leader who can reestablish the nations international prestige "The big risk for the Philippines is that it does have a poor track record for electing decent leaders" says Gareth Leather senior Asian analyst for Capital Economics Dutertes campaign is shakiest on fiscal matters His bawdy remarks at the Makati business forum did not woo the suited brigade looking for a sober stratagem for long-term growth Asked by TIME how he would help provide jobs for the million or so young Filipinos entering the workforce each year Dutertes unsophisticated answer was "money" and "investment" Yet Duterte has twisted this unfamiliarity with big business to his advantage playing up the image of the plain-spoken common man who isnt beholden to the entrenched dynasties that historically and still hold significant sway over the Philippines However Duterte is a scion in his own right his father was Vicente G Duterte who served as governor of the united Davao A black-and-white photo of his father occupies pride of place in his living room and he is proud of being born in the Visayas island chain as opposed to the typical power brokers further north Washington will hope that Duterte would at least follow Aquino’s bullish approach regarding Chinese territorial expansions in the South China Sea where both Manila and Beijing claim the resource-rich Spratly Islands Satellite imagery in early 2014 showed Chinese construction of a landing strip on reclaimed reefs building work that has now grown into full-scale military bases with air-traffic-control towers dredged seaport and defensive bunkers Some experts contend these “unsinkable aircraft carriers” even have surface-to-air missile capability Read More: The Philippine Election Front-Runner Says He Would Kill His Own Children if They Took Drugs But Duterte has actually made conciliatory overtures toward China proposing a joint exploration of oil and gas under the reefs and instead pointing the finger at the US for not challenging the Asian superpower earlier "Why the hell did the US not send its Seventh Fleet to confront China from the outset when they knew they were building a structure in international waters" Duterte asked emphasizing the benefits of dialogue over brinkmanship "If you militarize the waterway then freight insurance goes up making goods leaving the Philippines more expensive" It is a conciliatory approach that chafes with his domestic reputation After Duterte banned smoking in public places in Davao City he once even made a tourist eat a cigarette that he refused to put out A former smoker himself his aversion to the habit comes from his personal battle Asked by TIME about his health he holds up a wizened finger "Buergers disease and I have a bad case of Barretts [esophagus]” he says referring respectively to a disease that blocks the blood vessels in the hands and feet and a condition where the esophagus changes to tissue that resembles the lining of the intestine Despite his health problems Duterte has just celebrated his 71st birthday though some worry whether the travel late nights and stress of a full six-year presidential term might prove deleterious Especially as Duterte insists he intends to remain as President in his current humble three-bedroom home in suburban Davao commuting to the capital each morning on a private jet "I can have breakfast on the plane" he says That said Duterte has repeatedly vowed to resign if he fails to "eradicate" crimes drugs and corruption within six months and hand the reins to vice-presidential front-runner Bongbong Marcos son of former Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos But should people be back-and-forth escalation quickly turned the simmering tension into an overt struggle for power in the Middle East First the execution of a prominent Shiite cleric prompted protestors to set fire to the Saudi embassy in Tehran Saudi Arabia cut off diplomatic relations and kicked out Iranian diplomatic personnel Tehran banned Saudi goods from entering Iran Worst of all Iran blames Saudi Arabia for an airstrike that landed near its embassy in Yemen Saudi Arabias Sunni allies in the Arabian Peninsula largely followed suit by downgrading diplomatic ties with Iran However recognizing the dire implications of a major conflict in the region most of Saudi Arabias Gulf State allies did not go as far as to entirely sever diplomatic relations as Saudi Arabia did Bahrain the one nation most closely allied with Riyadh was the only one to take such a step Oilpricecom: $20 Oil Is Now A Distinct Possibility As Chinese Demand Wanes Many of them are concerned about a descent to further instability Nations like Kuwait and Qatar have trade links with Iran plus Shiite populations of their own Crucially Qatar also shares a maritime border with Iran as well as access to massive natural gas reserves in the Persian Gulf These countries are trying to split the difference between the two belligerent nations in the Middle East “The Saudis are on the phone lobbying countries very hard to break off ties with Iran but most Gulf states are trying to find some common ground” a diplomat from an Arab country told Reuters “The problem is common ground between everyone in this region is shrinking” The effect from the brewing conflict on oil is murky but for now it is not having a bullish impact In the past geopolitical tension in the Middle East especially involving large oil producers would add a few dollars to the price of oil This risk premium captured the possibility of a supply disruption into the price of a barrel of crude However recent events barely registered in oil trading That is because the global glut in oil supplies loom larger than any potential for a supply disruption Oil dropped to nearly $30 per barrel on January 12 and oil speculators are not paying any attention to the tension in the Middle East Also the conflict could simply manifest itself in an intensified battle for oil market share Iran has put forth aggressive goals to ramp up oil production in the near-term And Saudi Arabia continues to produce well in excess of 10 million barrels per day while discounting its crude in several key markets particularly in Europe in order to box out Iran Oilpricecom: Crashing Oil Prices And Dropping Rig Count Take Their Toll On US Output But what if the current "Cold War" between Saudi Arabia and Iran turned hot Saudi Arabia has a variety of reasons to not back down not the least of which is the very real sense of being besieged on multiple fronts An article in The New Statesman by former British Ambassador to Saudi Arabia John Jenkins clearly laid out the threats that Saudi Arabia sees around every corner: extremists at home; a growing Iran; toppled allies from the Arab Spring; low oil prices; and a fractured relationship with the United States The nuclear deal between Iran and the West was confirmation on the feeling in Riyadh that it is becoming increasingly insecure Already the two rivals have engaged in proxy battles in Yemen and Syria supporting opposite sides in those wars A full on direct military confrontation would be something entirely different however It would have catastrophic consequences for oil markets even when taking into account the current supply overhang Dr Hossein Askari a professor at The George Washington University told Oil & Gas 360 that a war between the two countries could lead to supply disruptions with predictable impacts on prices Oilpricecom: Rig Count: Capitulation "If there is a war confronting Iran and Saudi Arabia oil could overnight go to above $250 but decline [back] down to the $100 level" said Askari "If they attack each others loading facilities then we could see oil spike to over $500 and stay around there for some time depending on the extent of the damage" While not impossible war is speculative at this point Also $250 and $500 per barrel are numbers pulled out of thin air and may seem a bit sensationalist But despite the glut in global oil production somewhere around 1 mb/d the margin from excess to shortage is thinner than most people think OPEC is producing flat out and spare capacity is actually remarkably low right now The EIA estimated that OPEC spare capacity stood at just 125 mb/d in the third quarter of 2015 the lowest level since 2008 As a result even though it remains a remote possibility direct military confrontation between Saudi Arabia and Iran could well put oil back into triple-digit territory in short order This article originally appeared on Oilpricecom Contact us at editors@timecom "Duterte will kill all the criminals and drive out
